SUMMARY: Jonas' latest work is a very short war scenario. You can win by capturing a single city - St. Petersburg. At the start of the scenario, your Swedish troops are very strong and Russia is in serious danger. Later, though, Russia will win its concurrent war with Turkey and bring their army to bear on your forces. Expect a short victorious war without many surprises.

In spite of the mediocre score, the scenario is well-executed and shows good, sound design. There is nothing really wrong with the scenario that needs "fixing" it just is a very simple story with relatively little diversity in terms of player options.

Playability Rating

6 / 10
COMMENTS: The scenario is very short and in many ways unexceptional. You will receive several free units that appear at random and you'll be able to build a lot more. There is no need to build anything except for military units. You can't build roads, fortresses, or new cities as there are no settler units. My strategy consisted largely of overwhelming the defenders of enemy cities with hordes of infantrymen.

The units' movement rates are doubled (inf move 2, cavalry 4) for most units which when coupled with the roads allows you to conquer quickly. City walls are a formidable obstacle and attack/defense numbers are high to create more randomness. Ships are not useful for attacking cities.

The scenario is balanced and playable, but somehow it just leaves the player feeling kind of empty. It is just a little too easy and not much happens. I'm not really sure how to improve it... it does what it sets out to do quite well, it's just that this goal is not the most engaging one. I just felt that I had only one decision to make in the whole game, and that was whether to attack by land or to try to ship troops by sea. The game can be won either way.

Level of General Care

8 / 10

COMMENTS: The map is good and covers only the necessary area. Roads have been included liberally to make travel quick.

The readme file is extensive and quite good. The author includes quite a bit of history here, which is worth reading. He also details the units and his rationale for selecting them.

Pedia.txt is included.

There are some events, though not very many. Mostly they just add color. Once you achieve your goal of capturing the Russian capital, you win. I really felt there should somehow be more resistance from Russia and a greater diversity of Russian defenders. I wanted some more challenge and some more choices.

On the other hand, the units are well-balanced (exceptionally so) and the author makes good use of city walls and roads to make the war fast-paced -- a rarity in Civ II.

I liked the little flags on the cities and the bright, colorful and interesting border he used for the game screen (which features the flags of Sweden and Russia).

Art and Originality

5 / 10
COMMENTS: The unit and city art is acceptable and pretty and fits the scenario. The author has also included a nice border, and some decent terrain. In general I liked the art, especially the ships. It works well together.

I mainly took off points here for originality. Not much "new" is here, and there is relatively little in the way of options for the player or challenge. I often look for something truly novel about a scenario, and I just didn't see it here. The work is good, solid design, but not anything truly unique or different.

CONCLUSION: The scenario is a short one and is meant more for a quickie game than for anything else. Overall, I would describe this as a solid effort that uses a pretty standard war scenario. If you liked the American Revolution scenario included with CiC or enjoy John Ellis' early works, you will probably enjoy this scenario as well. The style is similar.
