SYNOPSIS: There are of course the West Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire.  Split nearly tight down the middle of the old Roman Empire.  The Anglo-Saxons are in Southern Britain and also around Denmark.  The Huns have cities that are around the Back Sea.  The Vandals reside in Spain.  There are Visigoths in Southern France and along the Danube.  The Francs live in (where else) France and Germany.  There are a lot of Barbarians who represent the countless number of other tribes.  Their largest presence is in the Near East.  Cities might be misplaced but because of my relatively little knowlage of this topic it didn't matter to me.  This scenario is so much fun!

It’s in the 5th century.  You’ll probably get too frustrated to finish it.  ;-)

Playability Rating

8 / 10

COMMENTS:  I give this scenario an 8 in Playability.  I don’t think that all the barbarians are as balanced as they should be. This kinda gives the scenario a way to make it more difficult for you.  The two easiest tribes are the Huns and the Anglo-Saxons.  The Huns have good starting position and an EXTREMELY large and mobile army.

When you take your first Byzantine city you get lots of money to buy temples and troops to keep cities happy when you take them over.  The Anglo-Saxons are right next to Hadrian’s Wall.  Easy to get and it’s almost impossible to loss a city if it’s got 2 infantry defending it.  Not a bad thing I remind you.  The thing here is also that I usually had to stop attacking when I simply ran out of units.  Then I have to wait maybe 10 turns to mount a counter-attack.  This is where it gets frustrating.  But if it wasn’t like this, than getting to Rome would be a pushover.  Maybe I’m just a poor general.  Atmosphere is wonderful, although the chariot looks a bit weird.

One of the best parts of this scenario is that you can actually fight with your generals and emperors/leaders.  It’s cool when you get to use them cause they’re nearly unstoppable.  Unfortunately your opponents have them too!  Hard to kill when you play on Deity.  Extremely satisfying when you finally kill them.  (Might just be me sucking at this game)

Level of General Care

9 / 10

COMMENTS: I give this scenario a 9 in General Care.  It’s not perfect but certainly above average.  Good documentation, but I don’t think that the Civilopedia has been changed though there is a PEDIA document that comes in the folder.  No city names.  I don’t need those.  No need for a tech tree.

The map is a very good one of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.  It goes all the way from the Iberian Peninsula way out to the Ural Mountains.

Art and Originality

8 / 10
COMMENTS: I give this scenario an 8 in Art & Originality.

The artwork is good.  Wonderful even.  Only normal Civ2 unit I found was the “Scout”.  Fits perfectly.  The units and improvements are all taken/stolen.  He admits that.  Not bad either.  Except for the chariot, it just looks a  little bit weird to me.  Doesn’t matter much though.

Most original idea I’ve found is being able to kill rival emperors and generals.  Tough but it makes you feel powerful.  It’s the first time I’ve seen this map too.
