  Historical scenario.

A huge scenario based on the fictional story of a former slave who leads a massive rebellion against the greatest empire of all time, Rome.

Overall Rating

30/30
SYNOPSIS: In my opinion, this is the best scenario ever. I enjoyed every minute of it. Alex introduces many new features such as multiple events, and takes the idea of quests to the extreme. The scenario has an on-going plot with conversations and suprises. Alex has been very original in every aspect of this scenario and I would give him more than a 30 if Scenario League allowed it.

Playability Rating

10/10
COMMENTS: If nothing else, I would just give him a 10+ for the amount of enjoyment I've gotten out of this scenario. I have never played a scenario this much and I've never had this much interests in it. The events guide you on your quests (many, many quests that make it interesting) and there are secret units you must kill for story, like the letters, flowers, crucified man, mansion, ship wreck, etc.

He has made the AI a worthy foe. Under Part 2: Ambush, I lost several towns to the Romans, something that has never happened to me. I had to restart that part and when I finally beat it I still lost a couple. He does this other times too. I actually fought somewhat of a tactical battle with Roman troops a couple of times. When a camp is destroyed it triggers a Roman army and this battle lasted several turns (including the death of Spartacus causing me to load my last game). It was a struggle for terrain advantage and hard to get an attack in because of superior Roman mobilization. It was different from any Civ2 battles I've ever fought because it was on the field and not based on city sieges. I experienced this many times. That was great!

But city sieges are well done. Many cities have a fortress outside of them for you to stack your units. But of course that city will have catapults and ballistae to annihilate your men! But on cities that don't have fortresses you have to keep you troops spread, or use a siege machine.

Level of General Care

10/10
COMMENTS: He has to get a 10 because of all the events. Think of how hard it must have been to balance everything into parts and events. He uses more units in this scenario than the maximum limit so he had to balance it to make sure some units wouldn't last through their part to make way for new ones. This is the first scenario to do this.

Look at all the Roman cities. I had a very hard time finding cities for my Roman scenario and after searching around only got the major ones. He included many Roman cities that actually existed which proves he spent much time in preserving the historical accuracy of this scenario.

The units look exactly how they did in the Roman days. None are really made up, he based them on the real thing.

The plot runs smoothly with conversations. I've never seen the movie or read the book Spartacus but I'm sure it falls true in that area. Another original idea that has never been used. The conversations make sense and follow order.

There are two things I would hold against the scenario in this area:

  • The money isn't controlled. By Part 4, I was at around 19,000 gold! (Luckily
there isn't much you need to buy since troops are built in 2 or 3 turns)
  • City growth is unchecked. I've seen some of the Roman cities double or
triple in size after three parts.

I think he easily makes up for it with the precision and accuracy of events.

Art and Originality

10/10
COMMENTS: He does have some new icons, but it is a war scenario and isn't concentrated on building an empire to stand the test of time. Since improvements really don't matter much he didn't have to. I've seen other scenarios get 10's with less original icons they made (me for one). How much time do you really spend staring at the city improvements compared to your army? I would rather him spend time making top-notch units than original city improvements.

As for originality, he did come up with the idea of multiple events. What other scenario has a flowing story like this one? I love the way when you sack a Villa and the ruin terrain shows a destroyed Villa! He has appropriate sounds and many of them are original. New terrain, new map. I don't see how he could get anything less than ten in this area.

NOTES: I don't think the Scenario League's grading scale is perfect. I think sometimes it might fail and cause a really good scenario to get poor reviews. Although many would disagree with my ratings in some areas, and they may not be completely accurate with what I should give him according to SLeague standards, I kept in mind the entire time how much fun I had when I played the game. After all, that is what a scenario is about, having fun. I can easily say that I had more fun playing this scenario than all the other scenarios I've played combined.
